I just finished seeing the movie adaptation of Half of a
Yellow Sun, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's award winning novel and smacking in the
euphoria of such great production and heart rending story, I want to share a
few thoughts.
I have not read the novel and I hear that the movie isn't
totally a 'sceneric' representation of the book but the viewer is captivated in
the story flow and the professionalism with which the cast interpreted their
roles, albeit unfamiliar.
Heart wrenching is the only way I can describe the emotion I
felt while watching the scenes of war - the anguish of losing a loved one, the despair
of a lost hope for survival, the massive destruction and desolation associated
with war, shattered dreams...
...how some politicians still
open their mouths and threaten
to drag this country to war over insubstantial affairs? I bet they need to undertake
visual history lessons a la Half of a Yellow Sun and understand that the after-effects
of wars are not worth it for our country, Nigeria.
Overall, I will say it is a great production, nice movie, unusual
storyline and I keep falling in love over again with Ms. Adichie and her literary
works. I read Purple Hibiscus about 7 years ago and I guess I'm now ready for a
fresh 'baptism' from Ms. Adichie - Half of a Yellow Sun, and maybe Americanah...
By the way, John Boyega impressed me a lot with his character
interpretation...
I couldn't believe he was the same young soldier in 24 Season 9.
And what can I say about Thadie Newton? Wow!
And of course, here is the woman I'm falling head over heels in love with...lol.
The adorable Chimamande Ngozi Adichie!
